Work Design, Yamazumi & Productivity Improvement

Productivity improvement should not start with pressure. It should start with understanding the work. This course teaches how to observe, measure and improve work in a way that is sustainable, respectful of people and addresses the real sources of productivity loss.

Work Design, Yamazumi & Productivity Improvement

Who this course is for

Industrial Engineers, OpEx Leaders, Production Managers, Supervisors and Plant Managers responsible for work design, time studies and productivity improvement.

Why this course matters

Productivity is often managed through pressure and targets — without understanding what operators actually do. This course teaches how to observe, measure and improve work in a way that is sustainable and respectful of people.

What you will learn

Course structure

  1. Module 1: Work observation — how to see work clearly
  2. Module 2: Time recording and activity breakdown
  3. Module 3: Yamazumi — visualising and balancing operator load
  4. Module 4: REFA Standards — average time, normal time, standard time
  5. Module 5: Allowances — fatigue, personal, unavoidable delays
  6. Module 6: Operator occupation and idle time interpretation
  7. Module 7: ERACS and SMED
  8. Module 8: Standard Work design and ergonomics
  9. Module 9: Productivity improvement plan

What you will be able to do after this course

Conduct work studies at the Gemba, calculate standard times using REFA Standards, build Yamazumi charts, identify productivity improvement opportunities and design improvements that are sustainable and respectful of operators.

Duration and format

25–36 hours over 4–6 weeks

Practical Gemba-based course — work observation, analysis, improvement project.

Reflection & Change Plan

Every course ends with structured reflection — comparing your current reality with what you learned, identifying gaps and building a concrete change plan.

Step 1 — Reflect
What did I learn that challenges how my team or company works today?
Step 2 — Compare
Where is my current situation aligned? Where is it misaligned?
Step 3 — Identify the Gap
Are we judging operator occupation without observing the real work? Does our standard time account for fatigue and allowances? Did the operator participate in the study?
Step 4 — Build the Plan
What 1–3 actions can I start in the next 7 days? What evidence will I collect?
